Coronavirus Update: MORE INFORMATION

At Physicians East, we’re always looking for ways to better provide for the growing needs of our ever-expanding community. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce that our own Dr. Hale Stephenson, of Greenville OB/GYN, was recently board certified in Urogynecology. For those of you who don’t know, and that’s okay if you don’t, Urogynecology is a sub-specialty of gynecology for the treatment of pelvic floor disorders, such as stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse.

Responding to the Need

In recent years, the number of women who are experiencing some sort of pelvic floor dysfunction has increased dramatically, and so has the demand for physicians specializing in the treatment of those disorders. In 1996, there was only one board-accredited program for the advanced training in Urogynecology. By June 2010, that number had grown to 37.

What is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

Pelvic floor dysfunction occurs when the pelvic floor is weakened, over-stressed or stretched due to damage caused by pregnancy, obesity, surgery, disease or high-impact activities. Symptoms of pelvic floor disorders include urinary or fecal incontinence, pelvic or vaginal pain, or difficulty going to the bathroom.
