Focus On Your Heart Health

National Heart Month is quickly coming to an end. We hope you were able to follow along with us as we opened up a few discussions on your heart health and how you could Start Living Heart Smart. We also hope that just because this month of Heart Smart awareness comes to a close, doesn’t mean that you lose focus on how to stay healthy and why living Heart Smart is so important. So let’s review the basics of Heart Smart Living.

Heart Facts

  • 9 out of 10 cases of heart disease are preventable. If you can prevent your own death, why wouldn’t you? Know your risk.
  • If you have a family history of heart disease you are at an increased risk. Be sure to communicate with your doctors and get any necessary screenings to learn more about your heart health.
  • Sometimes when genetics are a factor, medications are a necessity to Start Living Heart Smart. Again, talk to your doctor and take the necessary steps to protect your heart.

Start Living Heart Smart

  • Exercise. This doesn’t have to be hard or uncomfortable. Just be sure you are walking, running, biking, swimming, dancing or whatever you need to be doing to get that heart rate up for 30 minutes a day, three to five times a week.
  • Eat smart. Choose foods that are high in fiber like fruits and vegetables. Reduce your intake of red-meat and salt and increase your intake of meats that are lean proteins like fish and chicken.
  • No smoking. Get assistance from your physician or friends and family to help you quit if you need to. It will save both your life and your money.
  • Reduce your stress. Take 15 minutes out of each day to meditate. Try yoga, Pilates or anything that will take your focus off all of the problems in life for just a few minutes a day.

We know change is hard, but we also know that life without you would be hard for your family and friends. We encourage you to pair up with co-workers, friends and family members and work together towards your health goals. More than likely, they could use the push, too! It’s always more fun with the people you care about and you can even meet new friends on the journey.
