Hematology & Oncology

Physicians East has assembled a team of board-certified and fellowship trained physicians as well as a dedicated nursing and support staff to create one of the most experienced Hematology & Oncology departments in eastern North Carolina. Our caring and compassionate physicians will be with you every step of the way, working with you and your team of doctors to determine the treatment plan that's right for you.

The Difference Between Hematology & Oncology

While there are several conditions that serve to link these two otherwise separate specialties - specifically leukemia and other blood related cancers - it's important to note the differences between the two.

Hematology is the study of the physiology of the blood. This means, hematology is the study of the blood and other blood related disorders. This can include blood-related cancers as well as other disorders, such as anemia and clotting disorders. Hematologists will work with you and your team of providers to create a treatment plan for these various disorders.

Oncology is the study, treatment, diagnosis and prevention of cancer. This includes cancers of the blood as well as cancer that may occur in any other part of the body. Oncologists will work with you and your provider to determine the best course of treatment for your cancer diagnosis and they will assist in the diagnosis and staging of your cancer.

The most important difference to note is that not all hematological conditions are cancerous, that is to say a visit to the hematologist does not mean you have cancer. This distinction is important so you can stay better informed about your health and your health care plan, and it serves to demonstrate the broad range of specialties and services available at Physicians East.
