Dr. Patrick Brillant, a fellowship-trained advanced laparoscopy general surgeon with the Physicians East Surgery Department, recently received his certification in general surgery with the da Vinci robotic surgical system and joins Dr. McGuire as the second Physicians East general surgeon to receive this certification.
An already accomplished physician with nearly 30 years of experience, and who has performed laparoscopic surgery with Physicians East for more than a decade, Dr. Brillant’s certification of completion in the da Vinci system from Intuitive Surgical, Inc., an FDA-mandated and approved training program, provides another avenue to serve high-risk patients as well as those with challenging surgical conditions.
While laparoscopy is still the preferred method for most minimally invasive surgery, this newly acquired certification in multi-port robotic surgery will allow Dr. Brillant to provide an additional option for patients who may not be good candidates for traditional laparoscopy.
“Laparoscopic surgery still has many benefits and continues to be a very relevant non-invasive surgical option. However, the da Vinci robotic system gives me a surgical advantage for those select procedures requiring a higher degree of precision and dexterity that only robotic surgery can provide,” says Dr. Brillant.
Multi-port da Vinci surgery is similar to traditional laparoscopy in that it requires several small incisions in the abdomen. However, the da Vinci surgical system features a 3D view of the abdomen and special wristed instruments that bend and rotate far more than other laparoscopic instruments, providing an enhanced view of the surgical site and significantly improved precision and control.
Multi-port da Vinci surgery can be used to perform gall bladder procedures as well as hiatal, umbilical, inguinal and complex ventral hernia repairs. It also allows access to confined areas of the abdomen where laparoscopy would be difficult.
