Because there are many measures that you can take to prevent non-genetic related heart disease, understanding how your heart is performing is one the most important steps to becoming Heart Smart. These screenings range from the simple, everyday task to the more complex, you-might-want-to-call-off-work procedure. But regardless of the effort required to perform the screening, they are all significantly important in managing and preventing heart disease.

Heart disease is the number one killer of both men and women in America. You can be predisposed to heart disease based on your genetics (family history of heart disease) or your risk could be heightened due to an unhealthy weight and/or sedentary lifestyle. It is important to remember that 9 out of 10 cases of heart disease can be prevented with just a few simple lifestyle changes such as healthy diet and moderate exercise a few times a week.

As we’re sure you’ve noticed, February is all about YOUR heart. Here at Physicians East, we are excited to launch our first ever “Start Living Heart Smart” campaign. For the entire month of February¬ – which not-so-coincidentally, is National Heart Month – We will talk about heart disease, prevention, risk factors and the importance of heart screenings. We will also be sharing some tips on how you can Start Living Heart Smart every day. So be on the lookout for exercise tips, great Heart Smart recipes and several patient education articles to help keep you better informed about heart disease and what you can do to prevent it. Below are a few tips to get you started. While these statistics certainly are cause for concern, hopefully they serve as the first step in a major wake up call that each and every one of us could use.
